From Florida to New York by way of Alaska

Our family of five, standing outdoors on a sunny day with a scenic view of mountains, a river, and a blue sky with clouds. They are dressed in casual fall clothing, smiling and close together, surrounded by autumn foliage.

Our story

The name FLAKNY (flack-knee) is inspired by our family’s journey from Florida to Alaska, and ultimately New York, where we’ve made our home and are building our future.

When it came time to leave Alaska we started asking ourselves what we valued for our family. During this process we learned more about food and where it comes from. It became clear to us that raising nutritious food for our family, free of harmful chemicals, with a focus on sustainability, was a priority. Farmland in Upstate New York met our desires to embark on a slower paced life, grow our own food, and give our children the opportunity to explore the land around them. None of this means easy or less work; it is quite the opposite. But it is purposeful, it takes effort, and we find joy in our labors. Leaving behind hurricanes and earthquakes was an added bonus.

We also decided we wanted to share our efforts with our surrounding community. To accomplish our goals of sustainability, nutrition, and good stewardship, we are practicing a less commercial method of farming referred to as regenerative agriculture.  We raise our animals on pasture, when the season permits, in an environment that allows them to express their natural tendencies. We believe this improves their health and well being, while simultaneously improving the health of the land we steward. Our ultimate goal is better health for our family, friends, and neighbors.

It has been quite the journey, and this chapter is just beginning. We are grateful for the support of our family and friends as we moved to a new place and learned a new way of living. We are thankful for the new connections we have made since we established FLAKNY Farm in 2022. And we are excited to meet those of you who are newly discovering what we have to offer our little corner of the world. Thank you for joining us on this adventure!
